Sandals and a Walking Stick Only
“Whatever place does not welcome you or listen to you, leave there and shake the dust off your feet in testimony against them.”
- Mark 6:11
(For context read Mark 6:7-13)
Imagine Jesus – picture him , perhaps a backpacking guru comes to mind, complete with with a walking stick (think ultimate cool staff) sculpted from a beautiful wood, and a pair of sandals that have seen some serious miles (think the original road-tested Birkenstocks).
He's sending out his disciples, like a ragtag fireteam on a spiritual recon. Now, Jesus lays down some ground rules, and one's a doozy: "If a town doesn't welcome you, dust off your feet and move on!" It's like the divine equivalent of a bad online review – "One star! Rude service, wouldn't share in the miracles!" But hold on, this isn't some cosmic tantrum. The shaking of the dust is a biblical symbolic mic drop. It's a way of saying, "Hey, I offered the Good News, and you slammed the door. It's on you, buddy!"
Here's the beauty of it: We can't force faith on anyone. We're not miracle vending machines. Sometimes, folks just aren't ready to hear the message. That's okay! We dust off our metaphorical sandals, and keep on spreading the Word.
Remember, this isn't a rejection of you, it's a rejection of the Word. So, chin up, fellow disciples! The harvest may be plentiful, but comfortable shoes are not part of the package. Keep on sharing the Good News, even if it means leaving a little dust in our wake.
Peace be with you.
Amen.
