The path is for God not us
From the Gospel according to Mark chapter 1, verses 1-8
The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way”
“a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”
Amen to the Word.
The Gospel of Mark paints a vivid picture of John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus' arrival. This image invites us to ponder how we, too, can create a welcoming space for God within our own hearts.
While the idea of "straightening the road" might conjure up a smooth and predictable path, our journey with God is far richer and more dynamic. We're not simply removing obstacles; we're actively carving a unique trail through the wilderness of our inner world.
This journey doesn't require erasing every frustration, doubt, or temptation. Instead, we're invited to embrace the very challenges that shape us. Anger, frustration, and bad decisions aren't detours; they're the raw materials we must refine, the untamed wilderness we must learn to navigate.
Through these challenges, we cultivate resilience, compassion, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and God. We become more attuned to the promptings of the Holy Spirit, even amidst the whirlwind of our emotions.
Our path isn't a straight line; it's a winding journey filled with unexpected twists and turns. We might stumble, lose our way, or even feel the pull of distractions. But through each experience, we learn to discern God's presence more clearly and grow in our faith.
Instead of striving for a perfectly smooth and controlled path, let us embrace the courage to blaze our own trail, embracing the messiness of our humanity. For it is within the heart of our struggles that we encounter God's transforming love and discover the true potential of our souls.
In the Christian tradition, we have a rich heritage of saints and spiritual leaders who have blazed their own unique paths towards God. We can draw inspiration from their struggles and triumphs, learning to embrace both the joys and challenges of our own journey. I personally encourage you to read about the lives of our wonderful Saints and the examples they each set for us for His glory.
Remember, preparing the way isn't about achieving perfect serenity; it's about cultivating an open heart and a courageous spirit, ready to face the realities of life with faith and hope. It's about embracing the messiness of our journey, knowing that within the chaos, God's grace is always present, guiding us towards a deeper and more fulfilling relationship with Him.
Amen. Amen! AMEN!
