Never back down!
Getting to know a person is like peeling an onion. It’s a natural thing that we do most anytime we converse at length with a person we encounter for the first time.
“Where do you live?” “Where do you work?” “Are you married?” “Are you a football fan?” “Do you have a hobby?” “Where did you go to school?” Etc. etc.
These questions – and many other common ones – peel away layers, one at a time, often getting deeper into the person’s life with each additional question. And when done properly, our new acquaintances open their lives gradually without any sense of intrusion.
It has been said that “We, who are believers, are not in hell because of the grace of God and we are not (yet) in heaven because of the Great Commission.” Other than the worship of our Creator-Savior, our greatest reason to exist is to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with people who do not yet know Him as Savior. That is why it is so vital, that we seek through questions and kind conversation to engage unbelievers in conversion discussions.
Here is how I approach hostile conversations about my faith in Christ.
Undoubtedly a non-believer does have core beliefs that are easily discovered though a simple question, “What do you believe in?” This effective question gains insight to a person’s foundational beliefs. Regardless of the answer whether sincere or sarcastic my response is never hostile nor insincere. I bluntly tell them that “You were created by a loving God the Father, unlike anyone else, you are unique. Unlike any love you may know, your Father in Heaven loves you so much that he gives you and I the free will to choose whether or not to love him back. And regardless of our decision, he still loves us. So much so that he gave his only Son Jesus, our Savior, up to death so that you and I do not have to experience the suffering of death.
At this point the non-believer will challenge my faith to which I reply, “Truth cannot be righteously challenged. The burden of proof against this Truth rest with the broken world.”
“I respond to your disbelief with truth and love for the Bible tells me...
(Learn this scripture, 1 Peter 3:15) “Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,...”
Fellas, never back down from defending the truth of Christ our Savior. Regardless of sarcasms and disbeliefs, Jesus loves all of us unconditionally. This is the ultimate of truths.
The Bible says that Christ's resurrection is the pattern that we who believe in Him will follow. In other words, those who believe in Christ will one day be resurrected by God just as He was. Eternal death is only real to a non believer. The resurrection of Christ proves that those who trust in Christ will not be subject in eternity to a half-human existence in just their souls. It proves that our bodies will also be resurrected one day. Because of the resurrection of Christ, believers will one day experience, forever, the freedom of having a glorified soul and body.
And close your discussion with your friend of no faith by inviting him to church to learn and understand more about Jesus.
Amen!
